In very broad sense, there are two different tracks in getting into SAP - functional and technical. Technical track lays more heavily on design, modify and implement the system. Generally require programming skills. Functional track is more about understanding how users would utilize the system, then communicate to techies who would make the system do what users want. To be really honest, unless you have prior IT experience and knowledge technical track could be challenging to complete and difficult to convince potential employers to give you a chance. If you really want to pursuit SAP, my suggestion is that you pursuit functional track in SAP modules that are most likely be used in the industry sector that you are familiar with. Best wishes.

if you mean SAP the inventory control program, it is widely used. But for now, I would avoid manufacturing all together. It's dying because of off shoring and it's a cut throat nasty industry.

You might, you can start to make your inquiry and market reserach while you are learning. Are you plan to work for company or consulting work? Software like SAP came along way, nowsday they are become more friendly user and it will need less technical knowledge, more of application than engineering side of it. Are you flexible and willing to travel and relocate, this is the most crutial element for people in this field. If I know more maybe I can get you more opinion in specific as ex dot come designer. Good luck
