How can my husband get a job as a mechanical engineer?

My husband graduated in May with a BS in mechanical engineering. He has been looking for a job since then with no luck. He even had a professional resume done. Do you have to start off as something else? Is there a secret? What can we do? We live in NH. He has not been offered any interviews. But has done tons of job searching online.

Assuming that he did well in school and the resume is well prepared, I think you have to consider relocation. Consider somewhere there are more R&D for industrial, oil & gas or manufacturing businesses. In the current job market and at entry-level position, companies are less willing to consider non-local candidates. He may want to mention that he is willing to travel and relocate on his own expense. Even if he had a professional resume done, there is not such thing as one size fits all. I hope he is writing a good cover letter to go with each submission. Has he network with his school alumni and local engineering professional chapters? Those are good people to talk with, he will find many jobs are not posted online or anywhere else. Beside his school resources, http://www.asme.org/ is a good place to start. What online job sites has he looked? What companies has he applied for? Has he gone to job fairs and looked for work on line? Has your husband been offered any interviews? Have you tried to look for work outside of NH? Are you willing to relocate? Mechanical and Electrical engineers should be alright in looking for work, but it may take some time. Is he an US citizen? If he is a personable fellow and is able to sell himself, he will find more opportunity. The targeted job fairs and jobing site may have lists of some but not all types of job fairs that may be in the area. The targeted job fairs site will have more technical and security clearance type jobs. If your husband is an US citizen then I encourage him to try to find a job at those places.

Did he do an internship? That's usually pretty important - most schools push them, but some don't. He could check with his college placement office - they might have some leads for him. If you live in an area with few job opportunities, you might have to consider relocating. Good luck.
