Architect or Computer Scientist?
Asked by facilita2000
I had this big idea of becoming a prominent architect until I did a little research. The career is really overrated. You go to school forever then a computer programmer or computer whatever, makes more money. Am I wrong?

To put it bluntly, no you're not wrong. The vast majority of architects make a comfortable living in the middle of the middle class. You should only become an architect if you have a passion for it. If you want fame, money, and job security, well, be anything but an architect.

This is just what I think, I am not sure. But I think architecture is more interesting. If they are successful they probably make more money then computer programmers.

Some introspection will likely benefit you. The questions you have asked reflect shallowness and a desire for immediate gratification. This one is no different. "... a little research" is insufficient to answer questions about job satisfaction. As a programmer, what you create will be outdated in six months. As an architect, your work could stand for centuries. Job satisfaction trumps money every day. Your B.S. in I.T. should enable you to put food on the table, even if you work at it only part-time. A client who was a sculptor became an I.T. consultant for the money, has dropped that and is now importing fine furniture. Over the last 40 years I've made my living as a singer, an engineer, an intelligence officer, a management consultant and a Fortune 500 company executive. Go for job satisfaction.

Architect is more rewarding if you are a creative person. It will pay more if you become known in the industry. Computer programmers frequently work in the IT departments of many regular companies and banks. They are just there to troubleshoot applications when computer screens are freezing up or going slow. They have to listen to a lot of bickering from persons they service. http://www.referwork-jobs.com/archresults.htm
