How do I combine full-time job with part-time internship?
Asked by Mikelo
Hello All,
I want to know how do I combine full-time work with a part-time internship? For example: Let's say that I work full-time at one agency and have to do a part-time internship at a different agency. I want to know if there is a possibility for me to combine both of them.
Thank You.
I plan to study toward a Master's degree in Social Work and when I complete the program I will apply for a job at a school or agency in the area of vocational counseling and/or counseling in general. While I am stilling working I will be planning to go back to school to study for a BBA in Accounting and upon completing this program I will work as a part-time Intern in the area of Taxation at Ernest & Young. The purpose of this internship is to try out if a career in Accounting is a good match for me. Therefore, I would like to ask you a few questions pertaining to what I mentioned above:
Questions:
1. How can I combine a full -time job as a Social Worker and part-time job as an Intern working in the Accounting field?
2. How should I go about informing my employer about combining full-time job and part-time internship?
3. If for example my employer asks me how working as an Intern in the Accounting field would benefit me as a Social Worker? What should I tell the employer?

If you plan to continue working for the company who employs you full-time after your internship is complete, then you simply need to keep your employer informed of your scheduling needs. Hopefully, your boss/HR department are willing to work with you on this. Emphasize the added benefit the internship will give the company as you gain the knowledge of the internship experience.
If you plan to quit your full-time job shortly after the internship is completed, you have a harder decision to make. Depending on the relationship you have with your employer, you could be open with them. However, if you fear that you will be let go as a result, your intentions are best kept to yourself. Proceed with the plan above, but make no promises.
