Career Questions and Answers
Auto Mechanic schools?
Asked by TheChad
I am aspiring to be an auto mechanic and have some questions.
1. I want to work for a dealership because I here they make more $. Is there a difference in pay from say, Chevorlet dealer mechanic to a BMW dealer mechanic?????
2. I have been hearing that schools like wyotech and UTI isn't worth the money so I am going to go to a community college, is it still possible to get into the BMW STEP program?
3. What specialty in Automotive is the best pay. I have been thinking Transmission specialist because that always cost people at lest a couple grand. What is the best paying Specialty?
I live in Sacramento, California, so if anyone who lives around here could give me advice to a good school to go to that would be great.
Would prefer people who have gone down this road or know for sure. thank you for all your answers!

You might take a good look at the people who have told you that Wyotech isn't worth the money. Did these people attend Wyotech? Do they have a successful career in the automotive trade?
We own the #1 Award winning auto upholstery & classic restoration business in the bay area and have hired many students who have graduated from Wyotech and Sequioa Automotive Institute. Additionally, I personally know of several students who are currently employed at Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Jag and Ford dealerships because they were graduates of Wyotech.
Regardless of where you receive your training, you must remember that you will begin your career as an entry level employee. The money will come as you pay your dues and continue to increase your knowledge in your choosen field.

1. My husband was a car salesman for a while. The mechanics department being good, bad or ugly depends entirely on the individual dealership. You simply cannot compare one BMW shop with another BMW shop. The process might be the same but managers have different styles of running their shops.
2. You need to talk to a lot of shop managers in the shops you really want to work in. It's absolutely the only way you'll know what direction to take for that field.
3. ok, again, talk to a lot of different shop managers. Call them and schedule time. You will NOT regret it.

I would suggest that a tranny tech is good but also to be a trouble shooter for electrical would be a wider field with more promise. There integrating more and more electronics into autos today. These will not go away and a good trouble shooting person is invaluable. It's also rewarding work. But so is transmission work. You have many choice's so ask around and you'll get a better idea of what field you'll want to specialize in. Good luck in you endeavor and your on the right path by getting the schooling.
