Should I quit my job in retail to be a server?
Asked by jenny j
I go to school full time and it's a very competitive program. I feel like my teachers are just weeding out students every day to make the class size smaller. I had a job as a cashier PT because I thought it would be easy and no-stress and EVERY week, they schedule me 50 hours! On the service desk, by myself, where people throw things at me and scream in my face. Not what I thought it was going to be at all! I've only been working there about a month. They won't change my schedule and in fact get mad when I ask them to, and schedule me to do harder jobs or worse hours.
I am 22, been working since I was 15, and never have I worked such a bad job as this.
Should I quit this job, and maybe be a server?
No matter if I do work 50 hours, I'm still only making about 200 a week, and it's not enough money to live on.
If I was a server could I make more money working less hours?

well, it depends on the area, the type of restaurant, the clientele, etc. i work 5 nights a week (35 hours), and average about 170.00/night in tips. pick a place you like, and chat with the staff there, to see, how much you can make there. you sound like a hard worker, good luck !

Life is too short to have a job that creates this much negative in your life. If you can't do the schedule that you need to do, no one is listening, and the money isn't worth it........what are you staying for????

you will make as much money in one week, serving, providing you find a busy restaurant and you work
double shifts (lunch and dinner) or close. Best nights
are Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Work all three.

A server at a bar will make around 100 dollars a night and maybe more if you're in a metro area.

Definitely! I was a server all through college. It is HARD, HARD work but the tips make it worth it. I'm a very happy, cheery person and my customers always responded to it with good tips. On an average I'd make between $75 - $100 a night in tips...plus wages. Its the only way I survived college.

If they won't help you in your quest to lower the amount of hours then yes quit, but as long as you have another job to back you up.... As a server you do make less money but if you are a good server and have good customer service skills then it gets made back with the tips..
Good luck
