Career Questions and Answers

Jalna
Hey I need some resume tips. I'm going for work experience at magazines and i need some stand out wow! points?
Asked by Jalna
I need tips on illustration and keywords and things that you might not ordinarily put in any other resume but perhaps would be really impressive to an editor of a magazine and magazines like cleo and cosmo etc. Any tips would be greatly appreciated because i've been staring blankly at my very boring resume for the last three hours. Thanks

You should probably be thinking portfoilio more than resume. Try putting together a collection of the most professional writing you have done... On your resume, most companies prefer one's that have a simple lay out with little white space. This shows that you had a lot to put on the thing. It is more about the words than the format. Have a section for education(college), experience(internships/jobs/syudy abroads), special skills(excel, in design, that sort of thing), and activities (if you are in any industry related clubs/hold a position of leadership in anything). Be sure to use a lot of actionable verbs.... ex: coordinated and organized all sports article managed a staff of over 50 employees That sort of thing... Good Luck

i agree with the guy on top - about the portfolio. but if you don't have experience in published writing, highlight your extracurricular activities so the mag can see that you're active and always up to date on the latest 'gimmicks.' words to use...hmmm...multi-tasker, works well (or best) under pressure, with excellent time management skills...basically you have to project a really confident image and active lifestyle.
