What clothes should I wear for a desk job?
Asked by Louise
I'm may be getting a receptionist/desk job and i'd like to know what kinds of clothes to wear. I'm currently a dog groomer so there is definatly not a fashion statement needed there. Any good websites would be great just for examples. Thanks

The receptionist at my company dresses cute and trendy, she's 24 years old. She wears cute, open toed shoes, nice pair of slacks and cute baby doll shirts or button ups. She doesn't dress slutty or trashy. She is the first point of contact for our clients so she has to set a good example. She wears cute, knee-length skirts with cute t's and cardigans. You could go to places like Target or Forever 21 and match some really cute, trendy, mix and match outfits together. Even Old Navy has a link for "Wear to Work", it gives a head to toe outfit and they are really inexpensive! Good must haves...black slacks, khaki or tan slacks, I personally like white slacks. I like multi-colored shirts in the same shirt, white, black, brown, green, blue, I know that sounds weird but you can mix and match under a sweater with a different pair of slacks and have a great look! The possibilities are endless!

I'd say maybe a nice pair of black or grey pants. (not tight the nice work kind) a pair of heels and a nice blouse. Or maybe a medium length skirt heels and a nice blouse.
But if your a guy.. im sorry! haha. I hope this helped if you're a girl atleast.

I'd say business casual depending on the company you are working for, but that's usually the attire for the job you are referring to. Here's a link to help:

You really need to go by the place of business either as employees are going to work or are leaving and see what seems to be the manner of dress for that company...all places are different...some more strict, others a bit more relaxed...
Jeans and tee-shirts and tennis shoes (or flip-flops) I can tell you are NEVER office attire...
I would think khakis, black or navy slacks and a nice shirt or blouse with flats would be ideal...

Hi and congratulations on your career move!
You can't go wrong with dress pants, sweaters, blouses, nice shoes. You may also want a few skirts, blouses, etc. Even dresses!
What kind of office is it? Some are a little more casual, like khaki pants, etc. But DON'T wear jeans or tennis shoes or anything "revealing"; like a low cut shirt -- that's a no no.
Simply use common sense. I'm sure you have been to your share of banks, doctor's offices, etc. so look at how those people are dressed. I've worked in offices my whole life, so you can't go wrong with the above suggestions. Good luck and I hope the new job works out for you!

Well, what type of business will you be at? If it is a law firm then you will need to dress very well and professionally -- Talbot or DKNY styles.
If you a receptionist at a Tires Plus or Rapid Lube --- look at how the executives dress.
The key secret is to be clean, neat, and discrete. No facial piercings except 1 pair of earrings. No visible tattoos and it would be wise not to reveal that you have any ever in a professional environment.
Neat and proper in order to fit the business model. If you are in a very professional industry --- look for a clothing allowance and then adhere to it.

I can't help you with websites, but here are my suggestions.
You should be neatly dressed, certainly not flashily. Your clothes should be freshly laundered, and while you don't have to look like a model on the ramp showing off the latest fashions, you should not wear clothes that were fashionable forty years ago. Personal grooming is important, and make up should be attractive but not gaudy.
Instead of websites, why not go to a few well known offices in your neighbourhood, and study what the receptionists are wearing.
A receptionist is quite frequently the first contact a customer has with the company, and the impression she gives him forms the basis of his impression about the company as a whole.Naturally, the organisation you will be working for will have an ethos of its own, and your dress and make up should reflect that ethos. For example, a receptionist in a lawyer's office must project a different image from one in a beauty salon
Good luck.
