Trucking co's offer training to inexperienced drivers with little upfront cost. Any other industries do that?
Asked by Steven S.
A good number of trucking carriers offer low-cost, subsidized CDL training to employees who agree to work with the carrier for a period of time afterwards (usually 1-2 years). But, a driver can make between $30-40K in their first year (and pay back the training costs quicker than the agreement). Do any other industries have a similar setup where they train you for little upfront cost and you can make $30K+ in the first year?

LOL! Go ahead and fall for all that big money truckers make! I am married to one! We were over the road for over 6 years together and have been with many different companies. Not only do they never make the money that companies claim that they do, what the driver training program is really all about is keeping the driver slave to them for the duration of the contract. They can run you as little as they want but they get their payment first, you get what's left and if you quit before the contract is over they can garnish your wages at your next job! I never could understand why people thought truckers make so much money when the truth of the matter is that they actually aquire double the expense of other workers due to the fact that it is the same as supporting 2 households rather than 1 and the expense to live out on the road is outrageous! My husband drives local now, which means they don't pay you as much. But he loves what he is doing and I substitute part of his income with my business to help us with expenses. So I guess that was a happy outcome. But by all means, please talk to lots of other truckers before falling for this plot. I think you will find it to be true. Do some research on other areas of training. You may consider talking to Job Corps about what they have available and also check with your local employment office. They can give you a list of places that offer paid training or will pay for classes once you are employed by them in order to advance in your job. But always read the fine print and ask a lot of questions! I wish you all the best in the world at whatever you choose! Bonnie Ramsey

The shipbuilding industry has an apprenticeship program where the workers attend classes to learn the trade, work alongside master mechanics and get paid. Most manufacturing plants have training available while you earn income. I pay for my employees' schooling if they take classes pertaining to their trade.
