It is a good career in the sense that work is readily always available, everywhere (cars are everywhere on this planet and machines always break down). Hours are very normal, majority being day shift weekday positions. You may not care about that as a bachelor but you will when you have a family one day. Cons are that you work physically very hard, being on your feet all day long and getting dirty. Customer contact is usually required for consumer auto shops (you can get around this by working at fleet shops), so you tend to get annoyed at customers blaming you for things you never did and you have to be tight lipped about hearing of their 'expertise' in mechanical matters. A lot the mechanical work these days also just involve very mundane wear and tear repair tasks on mainstream vehicles. So if you love cars in the sense that you love high performance vehicles, you'll find it dissapointing having to work with a lot of low performing vehicles all the time.

Being an auto mechanic can be a great career. In many shops it can be very competitive and tough. Mechanics are typically pushed to accomplish as many jobs in a day because that is how many shops bill their customers. Also, mechanics can be encouraged by their bosses to do work that is really not needed as a way to charge the customer. Opening your own shop could be your best choice! Specialty shops are doing very well in our area, Harley shops, old car specialists, things like that. Also, be careful with the love of money. That will make you a very unhappy person in the long run.
