I have an interview for a warehouse position tomorrow, and i'm not sure how I should look?
Asked by TEEna
I have an interview for a warehouse position tomorrow. I'm NOT sure what I should wear.
In the past, I've worn business attire. Black slacks and a nice white shirt. I've NEVER gotten call backs for a warehouse position dressing like that.
I am a FEMALE..I know they are not discriminating..but I feel that if I look too "girly"..then of course their first impression of me would have them think that I can't last in the warehouse environment.. i might break a nail or it's too much labor.
So..how should I dress? I really want the job.. so i need you help! Should I wear like.. jeans and a shirt? what kind of shirt? shoes?
thank you so much!

I have a background in several aspects of human resources including the hiring process. For a warehouse job I would wear business casual- a short sleeve dress shirt (not sleeveless), or long sleeve; and dockers. This combination makes you look professional but not overdressed for the position you are applying for. NO tennis shoes. Check stores like Walmart for their causal dress shoes that slip on or tie. Again this is low key but professional.
Have a note pad and pen with black ink. Also have a list of questions handy about the company, weight to lift, etc. If this is your first interview DO NOT ask about money. That will immediately put you in the pile of folks just looking for a paycheck which usually means you will need to be replaced soon after hire. They want long term employees that they can train and promote up within the company.
If you have long hair pull it back into a ponytail. If you have tattoos wear clothes that conceal them. You don't want some prissy little thing deciding you are a thug just because of those two features, why risk not getting the job because of personal issues that you will never know about?
If asked about working Saturdays- if you truelly want the job say yes and mean it. When asked about your work history be honest but not defensive, or too wordy.
Try (and this is the hard part) to answer every question in a way that sounds positive- for example: though I have not yet trained on a forklift it is something I have always wanted to do and hope to get that opportunity here... versus no, I dont drive forklifts- which answer sounds more like a motivated person that really wants to fit the bill?
Your challenge sounds not so much in what you were wearing because it sounded appropriate but possibly in your answers- you dont want to come across as too masculine or tough, any more than you do too girly. They are concerned about females looking for "dates" within the warehouse, and you have to overcome that with power answers to make it more difficult to not select you.
Good luck hope this helps.

Probably, try wearing a nice dress shirt, blouse with a knee length skirt, also nice. For shoes, probably a low black heel. This says that you want to look professional but you're not over doing it, or looking "slutty". With slacks and white shirt, it doesn't say a whole lot about you but over doing it with a mini skirt and shirt will say that you probably don't have a high outlook for yourself. Wearing jeans and a shirt, on an interview, shows to some people that you seem almost like you think you already have the job. They want you to be comfortable but also show them and yourself respect in the way you dress upon first impressions.

Just wear a nice clean pair of pants/jeans and a blouse to match (which is easily done with most jeans or slacks) but most of all go in with a good attitude and be willing to work hard and let it be known in your interview. Being serious, mature and willing to work will be your best assets though in a warehouse.I have worked in warehouses/factories for 20 years and that has been to my advantage to let my work ethics be known. Wish you good luck with your interview.
