Career Questions and Answers

Starting a career in Autodesk Revit any suggestions?
Asked by a648two
I am interested in a carreer in architecture or design specifically using Revit. I have downloaded the Revit trial version and I have made it through most of the tutuorials. I am eager to learn more. Are there classes and training available in the Phoenix Metro area with job assistance? Any suggestions on where I should start looking for employment? I have no architectural or CAD training. I have worked as a construction superintendent building homes for the past three years. I have graphic design and web design experience. I have some minor back end web programming experience.

I'm a trainer for Revit in St Louis, Missouri with a degree in architecture and as a result, I can give you some advice even if I can't point you to a specific firm. First I commend you for downloading Revit and going through tutorial process. But as you may know, simply knowing Revit isn't enough... understanding the communication of the construction document process is important. The fact you have worked as a construction superintendent is a major plus...it means you have a better understanding of work flow and process and how a residence goes together than most students directly out of school. What I would do: go back to school and get a degree in drafting or architecture. Another option would be to submit your resume to area home builders or residential architects and see if they would be willing to give you a chance as the residential sector is your background. Your graphic/web design experience? In most cases will be viewed as useless unless those skills can be translated into design communication. Go for you dreams...you can do it. But I highly recommend you be open to learning new software and expanding your horizons beyond the residential sector if you want to have more opportunities...also the more education you have the better.
I train individuals in Autodesk Revit software and have been in the construction industry (including 7 years as a residential designer) for over 10 years.
