You don't call. You go in between the hours of 2 and 4pm, Monday thru Thursday and ask to speak to a manager. When they ask why, you tell then you are interested in applying for a SERVER position. They are not called waiter/waitresses anymore.

By "call" I hope you are meaning that you are going to go to the restaurant and ask for an application for employment. Having said that - that is the best way. Simply GO IN (afternoons are best) and ask for an application for employment. Be prepared to get an preliminary interview on the spot as most busy restaurants are constantly hirering people. What they are looking for is GOOD PEOPLE who always can find something to do rather than sit around and ask what there is to do OR can't seem to find anything to do. Good people take OWNERSHIP for their job and act accordingly - they OWN what they are doing and do the best job they can. Since there is ALWAYS something to keep people busy in a restaurant - the busy person will STAY EMPLOYED.

Are you saying calling around restaurants to ask if they are hiring?
Just go straight to it. Do you have any experiences as a waitress? When someone answers the phone, as that you are intersted in a waitress position and if you can speak to a manager. After the namager answers, ask the manager if they are hiring someone who is (give the manager few of your qualities as an employee). Be courtesy and polite, if they told you they are not hiring at this time, ask if they mind you call back in a few weeks if you are still looking.
Actually the last anwer is pretty good, go in in person and ask for an application. Of course you want to dress nice and neat too.

Go in when they are not busy and don't be cocky or pushy but go in with the attitude of "I want to work here you need me to work here when do I start? Right now would be fine".

Don't call on the phone. Go in person, and ask for an application, if this has already been done, then it is Ok to call back once to check on it. You can say something like "Hi, may I speak to the manager please"? Then give them your name and reason for calling."I am checking to see if you have any positions open". If you just call, it will be forgotten in a matter of minutes. If you call too many times you will be viewed as a pest.
