Career choices between mechanics and computers?
Asked by detech69
How to combine computer science with auto mechanics. I enjoy both plus have a college degree in CIS and right now taking automotive courses. I have a feeling that I’ll have to make a choice on one of the two fields. Is there a web site that can help determine a descent career path?

If you want to work in mechanics, a degree in computer science will not hurt you. As you probably know, most cars after the late 90's are computer controlled. If there is a problem with a vehicle, you must run a diagnostic through its computer. So there is a lot of similarity between the two fields. Maybe you could do both careers, perhaps by offering tech support part time and then working in the automotive repair industry. I would find a local career center and ask to be connected with professionals in the fields that interest you. These people can give you advice and possible job leads.

automotive electronics pays a lot, many of the shops in my area are looking to fill slots on this. Im sure other areas are as well. Todays cars come with a lot of embedded systems. They do break.

A decent career path... interesting
Experts recommend finding a company
you want and work your way backwards.
What does that mean, exactly?
Make contact with a company, find the skills they need,
and acquire the skills.
