I've just started work as an operations manager. It's my first......?
Asked by KT
job as a manager as I come from an engineering background. I feel I am struggling with the job as I often have to cope with 5 or 6 tasks at once plus organising 10 staff. A friend told me to make use of Microsoft Outlook's task and calender. This helped me time manage but I still go home at night with my head splitting in two.....am I doing something wrong ? Do other's suffer the same as me ? Do you get used to this way of life. And most importantly can anyone offer any tips and on how to be more efficient. I really enjoy the job but it seems so draining. Thanks in advance

It is a good idea to use the Outlooks task and calender. Once you have listed the tasks, prioritise them. Just remember you cannot do everything at once or in the same day. Managing a team and your own administration tasks is difficult but with time it does become easier and you will find the best way forward for yourself. In the meantime, learn the art of delegation. Any of your tasks, which could be completed by your deputy or another team member, pass this onto them. Ensure that you tell them your requirements for the task and when you require this to be completed by. Good luck

I think it's all about getting used to the new job in all aspects--new duties, new people, etc. Look at it this way--you were hired for the job b/c a position needed to be filled. There were things that needed to be done before you took the job and now more things need to get done. It's all about getting caught up, that's all. You feel overwhelmed b/c you know that things need to be done immediately. Once you prioritize your tasks, the time after the first few weeks will be better. Good luck. FYI: I really have no experience in your area, but as a new HR intern here at my present company, I took on most of the tasks of the old HR Coordinator. I know things can get a little overwhelming. When I first started, I felt very overwhelmed and like I didn't have enough time to complete things. Now that things are all caught up, I have a whole lot of free time.

i wouldn't worry about it, alot of people step into a new position, a try and run before they can walk. start the day, make sure you get your full briefing, make sure you understand any problems. Operate your team, your there mainly to run place and the managers, they know their job, but will need a push to get the best out of them. Operate the team, task things down the line, put yourself up on a ladder and push things down to others if it doesn't need you in person. (find the people that want to shin and let them give them more tasks than others). Over see other managers make sure their doing their job. Make sure you've got all figures correct, before making any decision. The head splitting thing should pass but try to slow down at work, think about what your doing and then do them, don't do think rashly.
