Most trade schools offer heavy equipment training courses. As for the union thing once you nail down a job you will sign with a union that covers the particular area that you are working in. The biggest thing is getting experience on the heavy equipment. Not all construction firms are willing to hire "green horns" right out of school, so you might have to gain experience with a smaller non-union firm and move up from there. Any urban area that has allot of subdivision building going on. In Canada southern Ontario is the hot spot right now. Good luck in your search.
