What to do with 10 yrs admin experience?
Asked by NJ
I am a hard-working, smart, dedicated and efficient admin. asst. After 10 years in positions like this, I really feel like its time to move on - no more making coffee, running errands, getting lunch, etc. Problem is, there is nowhere for me to go with my current company, and while I would like to find a new job anyway, I feel like employers will only consider me for a position as an assistant. Any advice? Anyone been through a similar situation?

Go to a professional placement service. Most of them charge the client, or hiring company, not the employee. Explain to them that you want to break out of the mold of Admin, and want to do something different. Sales is a good transitional career, and there are tons of them out there. Some companies do their own training for sales people. Think about what you want to do, and then go to some of the websites for those kinds of companies. You can submit your resume with a cover letter stating that you are looking for something different. Career Fairs are a great way to network among employer seeking new people. Go on websites like Career Builder and Monster, and take a look at the postings for jobs. If you are still employed, be careful about posting your resume on the internet. Your resume could be seen by someone at your company. It is always better to send your resume directly to the company you are applying to. You can also email it to any recruiting firm that may have jobs posted on the websites. Good luck to you.
