What experience do you need to become a Frito Lay route driver?
Asked by noelgallagherowns
My friend interviewed for a Frito Lay RSR job and didn't get hired, even though he had lots of experience in retail. For those that work at Frito Lay, what previous job experience did you have? My friend said they asked him if he had any sales experience..... which confused him since the drivers don't really do sales stuff. Any help you could give me on this would be great!

Yes, the drivers do sell their products! They have to deal with their route as if it were their own business for the most part! I know you can find Frito-lay products everywhere, but that's because the current route owner is a good sales persons! You have to be able to generate NEW sales in the area assigned to you! That's how the company grows! It may sound too simple, but that's it! You don't just drive a truck, you have to be able to introduce all of the new products and get the stores to buy them from you and not the other guy! (WISE Outlook to the chip business!) Your friend probably sold products at retail locations, that's not the same as a JOBBER!!!!!!!!

I work for Frito as an RSR. I had 10 years experience as a route driver when I got hired but people do get hired without sales experience.
Yes it's true at Frito we have space in stores that's our's to fill. And we do have displays that are to be set up without selling but that is not always the case. Where we make our money is by "upselling". Sales experience helps because you need to know how to talk and deal with the managers to get extra space, more displays and possible selling in extra product.
I can't answer why your friend didn't get hired but some of the reasons could be other people had more experience, they passed the test and he didn't, or maybe the other people had the personality that Frito DC was looking for. Again I'm just throwing out some possibilties. But Frito does love people with past sales experience.
