It can be totally different. For example, electrical engineers (EE) can design semiconductors, design products like Slingbox or work in an electrical power plant. All these jobs are totally different from the IT industry.

Electrical Engineering is a career within its own right in the Engineering Discipline like Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Civil Engineering way before IT was even a word.
