Miss J
No part-time job, should i try volunteering?
Asked by Miss J
i havent been successful in any application for a parttime job since the past 6 months, i have even been to Primark for interview but never got contactd again and today i got a letter from college that i have been unsuccessful in my application for student ambassador, and i know that the reason is probably because i dont have any customer service experience and i am always shy in interviews and dont say much. Would volunteering help me with getting a part-time job? and what kind of volunteering should i do?

Volunteering is a good thing to do. As well as doing something good for someone else it will also show future employers that you are willing to work, and do good for others. Also these people can also be used as references for future job applications. The downside is that you will be working for no money, but if this will help you in the future then it will be worth it. GOOD LUCK!!

Volunteering is a good idea. What type of volunteering should you do? Well- this really depends on what type of job you are looking for. Have a look at: http://www.do-it.org.uk/ Maybe you could get a Xmas temp job for the moment, a lot of places have been looking for staff. Another thing you could do is widen your job search- have you looked in your local newspaper or tried your local jobcentre? Target companies/firms where you want to work, enquire instore if there are any vacancies, send speculative applications out with your CV. This worked for me! Good Luck!

Yes voluteering is a good idea - it looks good on your CV and it will give you some experience and confidence. Interviews are scary but try to remain calm. Afterall, what's the worst that can happen? Read up on interview techniques and practice with friends and family. You'll get there in the end - good luck!

Volunteering would probably be really good for you as a person and improve your CV. Consider what really interests you children, animals or whatever and that should give you a clue as to where to start. Try googling charity jobs or contact your local volunteer bureau. Good luck.

my cousin had this same problem, the best thing to do is volenteer for at least two months as employers take that seriously. The best thing to volenteer in is a charity shop as it is relitively easy and they class that as a job on your cv. also try and get a christimas temp job, one of theose ones for a month before christmas as they are easy to get and you then have the experience !!!!! what all the employers want is someone with past experience!!! hope you get one soon!

Volunteering is a great idea. If you find somewhere to volunteer where you'll be working with plenty of other people (maybe helping people somehow?) not only will it help you with your shyness and developing good communication skills, it will also give you a great chance, when vacancies come up in that place or related areas, you'll have the experience and the fact that you were a volunteer will be great for your CV. Best of luck!

Maybe the use of a small (i) for you as the first person might indicate that your English is not that good. I assume that all the perfect spelling is down to the spell check. Your use of punctuation is incorrect in a lot of instances as to is the lack of the apostrophe, which would be a further indicator. Being shy is not a quality I would look for in a Customer Service position or in a shop when there is a need to deal with strangers. Suggest you rethink your employment requirements to positions better suited to your talents. Only you know what they are. Voluntary work in different aspects of life might help to sort out what you are best at so give it a try. Best of luck.

You should look at other ways to improve your skills to, In my job a big part of it is personal development. You should do some reading on the subject like think and grow rich (it in not all about money) how to win friends and influence people (it does exactly what it says on the tin. Have a look at my business too. It would help make money and improve your belief.

Try a temp service or apply for internships within your major. Career counselors can help.
