Career Questions and Answers

Can't decide what career path I should take.?
Asked by nick
I am currently in the DEP for the Marine Corps but I don't know if that's the right path for me(my mos is aviation mechanics). I think I would rather go to college and major in mechanical engineering and maybe minor in electrical engineering, but I don't know what my career options would be after I graduate. I want a job that pays well and I would enjoy going to work everyday. What careers options do mechanical engineers have? Do you think it would be smarter to go into the marine corp for 6yrs then get out and go to college for mechanical engineer? I know alot about how to work on cars, I am really interested in how things mechanically and electronically work, but am not sure if I would rather fix things or design(engineer) things, I guess cause I don't know how the engineering field works.

Hey congrats and thank you for being one of the few @ marines! Well I guess the first question I would want you to ask yourself is do you want to do something more hands on @ fixing the mechanical/electrical workings of something or the development of them? And how much time n effort your willing to put into the training...because a degree in enginering is heavy on the maths and sciences..physics etc...so it in part depends on how you feel about the academics of it all. Once you know that part then maybe talk to some guys who work jobs that intrest you...they could tell you more about what its actually like as well as salary and employment opportunities etc. Theres some awesome educational opportunities within the military and then practically guaranting you work with a leg up on civilian applicants. See how your mos in aviation mechanics pans out for 6 months or so ...it will help you get a feel for it ..practical information ..it will help you choose between more hands on or development . Good luck n God Bless

I love mechanical engineering. Very broad spectrum of choices, thermal design, materials technology, fluid dynamics, machine design. You name it. Lots to do. Regarding the marine training, exciting, 6 years is a long time and the older I get the harder it becomes for me to learn new things. Whatever you decide, when in MechE, go green.

If you want to compare career options and salaries, there's a tool online where you can type in a job title, see the career path for that job and the salaries for related job titles. It is at http://www.payscale.com/gigzig.aspx I've included links below showing what I found when I typed in Mechanical Engineer and Electrical Engineer. Hope that helps, Assistant to Dr. Salary
