What is everything you need to do and have to become a New York City firefighter?

I was just wondering if anyone can explain what I have to do and have to become a firefighter in NYC from step 1.

your first step is to apply. my boyfriend applied for the FDNY right when he graduated high school. he didn't hear from them until he graduated college 4 years later. then he went through the academy, not sure how long that took... it got him in shape though, he sure worked his butt off during academy. now he is finishing up his probation period. that lasts a year. he can't get hurt or mess up or they can decide not to keep him. at the end of the probation, he will leave his firehouse for 2 months to work at another firehouse. during probation there are a lot of rules and he has to do the b*tch work and the guys like to mess with him. he has a good sense of humor though-- like for example, they pour buckets of water on his head from the 2nd story as he is walking by and his first night there they all walked around naked. he always has to answer the phone and the door, he can't sleep or sit on anything soft until midnight, he has become an expert at cleaning, mopping, polishing door handles, doing laundry, etc. its a lot of work, but he absolutely loves his job. he loves going to work and he loves the people that he works with. now, granted he does work in a very "close" firehouse where you have to have connections to get in, but still how many people can say that they love their job? good luck...
