Career Questions and Answers

should i get a masters in Mental health counseling?
Asked by wevercarly
i just started a master's program in Mental Health Counseling. Now i'm getting nervous about all the debt i'll have and whether it's just a stupid decision to do that. I understand counselor's don't make much money, so I'm wondering if I should just cut my losses and pursue a differnet career. I don't need to make a lot of money I still want to be able to live comfortably. I feel like i'm just getting in over my head with the loans for something that won't really pay much.

I would think it would be worth it - counseling is a growth industry...(why is that?)...more and more people need/want to speak to someone objective for a variety of reasons. You have very good income potential. I have seen private counseling session priced in the $80-$115 per hour range with masters degree counselors. There are also group sessions which can be quite lucrative. The important thing really is do you like this work and do you have a passion for it. That is the only reason to do this. It is tough work..sad many times and grueling mentally for yourself. You will need to find clietns and to both appeal to them and make them see the 'light' at the same time. Good luck!

The masters would increase your earning potential and qualify you for higher positions, such as director or administrator. I'm unclear on if you've been working in this field already. If not, I suggest doing so to get a feel for it and find out if this is the career you want. If it is, go for the masters.
