Can you work as an LPN without your license?
Asked by tannie
I am a recent graduate of an LPN training Program. I am looking for a job to gain experience. I have noticed that everyone wants LPN's with experience. I have been looking for internships/externships with no success on finding any. Any suggestions on how to get the work experience.

I'm not sure if the hospitals and nursing homes in your area offer positions as student nurse techs (glorified CNA), but you could consider working as one. Usually, they just require a semester or two of clinical (which you obviously have), and you can maintain that position for up to six months following graduation while you get some patient care experience and study for your boards. It isn't the same as LPN experience, but it is better than nothing.

When I graduated, I didnt' have the experience myself. I only had the 160 hours internship in. I still applied for jobs that I didnt' have the "experience" for and I landed my job.

You realize that LPN means LICENSED Practical Nurse. So by definition, the answer is no. You cannot LEGALLY work as an LPN without an "L."

YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR STATE BOARDS. YOU CAN ALSO WORK AS A CNA IF YOU WANT TO, BUT YOU'D GET EXPERIENCE WORKING AS A GRADUATE NURSE. GOOD LUCK...
