The pre-employment medical exam is to find out how your general health is and if you've been using drugs. The State of California, and in particular, the Correctional Division has to be very careful of who they hire. Besides your health, they'll want to look into any criminal history you may have. They can also check your financial status. How long it will take for you to actually start the Academy will depend on how many vacancies there are at the time. It's a fairly long process, but well worth the benefits. It's a career that will take you to retirement age and give you a good package for afterward. This was one of the options I had when I was just starting out and now I wish I had gone for it. A lot of my friends are in Corrections and they're doing very well. Good luck with this.

Not sure about CA, but where I live, it;s just a basic exam to see if you are healthy enough to handle the stuff you need to do, check for drugs, that sort of thing - didn't take long.

I don't know the second part of your question.
But for the most part, it's a DRUG SCREEN, as well as a physical to make sure you don't have any sever injuries, or illnesses that will make you unable to get through training, or conditions that might be exacerbated through training.
I would ask a recruiter at the academy for more details.
