How to become an Auto Mechanic?

Hi, I'm working as an IT technician and looking for a career change. I'd love to become an auto mechanic, or start a business dealing with vehicles (repairing, etc). Basically, I enjoy working with my hands and with equipment, especially vehicles and I'm looking for ideas on how to get started in that area without any prior experience. In IT, you can gain experience in helpdesk and obtain certifications; however, with the trades like auto mechanic, it isn't as straightforward. What's the best way to become an auto mechanic? What are the future prospects? Are there any businesses that one could start in this area? Thanks
