Question of T
When doing consulting abroad should you demand to be flown home on the weekend?
Asked by Question of T
I am being offered a consulting job in Nigeria for about 12 working days; however this also would include spending two unpaid weekends there. I've worked for other companies and they would pay for a flight home every weekend. I would be ok with spending one weekend there, but two unpaid weekends seems like I'm being taken for granted. Any advice? Home is Germany and I'm giving a workshop in Nigeria

I don't think you should take it for granted that you should get flown home. In my company, if you're working in Europe you'll usually (but not always) get flown home for the weekend. If you're working further afield (Middle East or Africa) then you wouldn't expect to get flown home, unless it's a long-term project and then during the duration of the project you'd get flown home sometimes but not always. I would check your contract and your employee handbook to see if it makes mention of them paying for your flight home, and if not then give it up. I would probably want to stay anyway - it's a part of the world you've probably not been to before and may never go to again, so why not take the time to do some sightseeing? They'll have to pay for all reasonable expenses such as food and accommodation over this time.

If I were you I'd check to be sure that job you've been offered is an authentic one and not a scam or an abduction.

Sorry economy is bad. Jet Fuel and other oil spikes have caused higher flight tickets and the economy is shaky so companies are pulling in their belts

Would you really fly home for a weekend with a job that's not that long or is it just not wanting to go in the first place.Flying so boring

You don't say where "home" is, but if it's very far, no I wouldn't expect that. This is a very short-term assignment. Maybe you could work through at least one of the weekends, and cut your total time there down.
