Any job ideas for a very shy lad of 27 who is intelligent but unable to do labouring work?
Asked by wemblania
He has previously been a cashier but can't cope with talking to people or shift work. Mail sorting might be an option. He hasn't any money to pay for any courses. He can chat articulately with any person on their own but panics when there is a queue of any sort. He has a past injury that prevents him doing manual work. Can't sit for hours in the same position.

It's funny because I actually thought of mail sorting before you said it. He could also be a secretary or something. Possibly a card dealer at a casino.

Try working in a customer service call center. You only have to deal with one phone call at a time and they can't see you. You're just a helpful voice. People who are very shy do very well working in call centers.

I am an employer and it sounds like this person has a lot of exclusions. I would have to say a store greeter, like in CVS pharmacy or Wal*Mart. Any job that is piece work, like apple picking, sorter, assembly line. A night time watchman, security guard. Call centers for Banks or Retail. Good Luck!

Intelligent? Hmm, intelligence can bring one very very far. I would suggest starting his own business. A home based one maybe? Since he's shy and probably wont do too well being face to face with customers. So probably a home based business or the sorts. :)

Have him make a list of everything he loves and enjoys doing, that are not limited by his limitations. Then prioritize the list. Take the top three things and brainstorm ways he could make money doing those things, either separately or together. Then take action to do just that. Stop trying to fit him into existing jobs, unless they fulfill the above criteria. It may work better to create his own job. Best wishes!
