Is Retail Management easy to learn?
Asked by alan213006
Is retail management easy to learn? I ask this because I am contemplating changing my career to retail, but have no degree or retail experience. I do however have good admin and customer service skills. So it is easy to become a retail manager? If so, where in the UK are the most opportunities for such retail work? Liverpool has virtually none! Very depressing! All the jobs are always snapped up here within seconds!

retail is the worst industry to get into I've worked in retail for ever and i hate it as you are always working towards a target, i now work in retail banking and so many of my colleagues are signed of sick due to stress as the targets are unachievable, look for a different career.

Retail work is long hours & low pay. And unless your qualified, its a long way up the ladder to the top positions. You have to be a keyholder, so if theres problems with deliveries after you've already done an 10 hour shift, you have to olige! The salary of 55k mentioned is hilarious, am presuming thats dollars not pounds, half the value in pounds (£27.5K) sounds about right. No manager ive hear of eaarns this, directors are close, but definitely NOT a mere manager Most companies have their own training programs, maybe you could choose a retailer you would like to work for or a retail sector, then persue a career within their training program? There are usually alot of positions available, as there is a high turnover of staff, as the roles are so demanding.

I am a retail store manager and make very good money. I do not have a degree but have an unbelieveable amount of retail management experience. I started my first retail job as a sales girl making 8 bucks an hour, then within 4 months I proved myself and was promoted to keyholder, then 6 months to assistant manager, then not long after the manager. I took that title on my resume and got hired again as a manager, then another place and another. You need to have experience to get a retail managment job. Customer service experience will only get your foot in the door as a sales person. the only way to gain that is to somehow start at the bottom and do an exceptional job and move your way up the ladder. The turnover rate in retail is very high, so believe me, wherever you go...within a few months a management position will open up. just keep building experience. All of these people are complaining about low pay and long hours! This is also not true! I make over 55K a year and work 9-6! When you get to the top you can work whatever hours you like! and when you prove yourself over and over agian, you can ask for as much money as you lke!
