Is there a job that would pay me to learn and use languages?
Asked by Lauren M
Other than translator/interpreter.
Languages are my talent and true passion, and they say to do what you love, but I can't find any jobs that fit the bill *and* pay the bills! I've learned/taught myself/studied french, finnish, spanish, italian, chinese, japanese, irish...

First of all, any job in sales/manufacturing and item distribution, since almost everything now is made overseas or in Mexico.
Maybe something in travel?
Maybe you could teach!
If you are an entrepreneur, you could start your own translation business.

the united states army. they have more uses for multi-lingual people than for translators and terps. They have soldiers that learn the languages in order to deal with people on a regular basis

I have given your question a lot of thought, but I can't think of
any jobs that would fit the bill.
Usually, the language is an adjunct, to the main purpose of the job.
I worked for German and Swiss/German companies and found that by learning a large technical vocabulary, in addition
to normal German, gave me a huge advantage in my chosen
field.
Sorry I couldn't come up with anything, but best of luck in your
endeavours.

I also love languages and have found that being a translator has allowed me to do what I love while not starving to death.
It's hard to become a translator overnight but you can do it. Register with a bunch of translation agencies and talk to any local businesses that might be in need of some translation help.
There are more and more places that need translators to help them get their products to other countries, and you could definitely be a part of that.
