Do i need a portfolio if I want to be a copy writer?
Asked by metalikidd7
I am currently a junior at NYU, majoring in Economics and minoring in Creative Writing. I am interested in pursuing a career as a copy writer once I graduate. However, I haven't made a portfolio of my own works. Is a portfolio necessary when you want to break into this industry? Can I just join an Ad agency? Please tell me the best way to break into this industry. Thanks.

I don't know if you would call it a portfolio in the strictest sense, but you should have something that shows your writing skills as they apply to copy writing. I'm a graphic artist and have a more traditional portfolio to present the body of my work.Copy writers,
I believe, have "clips" of their work to show what they're capable of. If you don't have any actual ad copy you've written, perhaps you could review a few print ads and write alternative copy to go with them. This will at least give you an idea of what you're up against.
