Asked by Britt
My boyfriend wants to become a firefighter (we have a new local station hiring) but what does he need to go through to train, etc (Training schools by the stations, etc) Any advice helps. Please, serious only Yea, he realizes that he needs to be in top shape and stuff. In fact he wanted to go into the army. He loved the idea of self-discipline and barracks and stuff, he'd fit right in.

Not sure what state you're from, but here in FL you can attend one of the many community and local colleges that have a fire academy or attend the fire college in Ocala. The classes last about four and half months for a day class and up to six months for a night class. After that, he'll need to get his EMT cert. Most all Fds want you to be an EMT at a minimum. Some want Paramedics. Then start applying. Some FDs will hire you with just your fire standards and give you a year or two to get your EMT/Paramedic. The best way is to head on down to the FD you're interested in hiring on with and talk to the FFs there. They'll be able to steer you in the right direction. Best of luck to you!

It is different state to state, but there has to be a test of some kind. It's either civil service or the department will put on a test when they are ready to hire. Talk to your personnel dept at your town hall or walk into the FD and ask them

first he needs to be in top condition, the first test usually tests endurance and strength, then he will need to take some physics (thermodynamics and such). after that the worst part is having to live in the barrack and in constant alert, but eventually he'll get used to that, like in the army, just be there on time, willing to do whatever they ask you to do and always make the extra effort to end top
