Why am I being turned down for the position, but im qualified?
Asked by phillyd124
The security company I work for is contracted by a well known facility. One of the posts for our company is working on the computers and not too long ago it was changed to be in charge by the client, but they were still using our security officers. It was made to have 3 full time shifts and 3 part shifts to cover the weekend shifts. I was the one that received the part time position. The person that had the second shift position full time just recently quit, so I decided to put in for it. I got denied by my boss because he told the client he had someone else for the job. I am one of the remaining original members and new hires are getting promoted very quickly to great positions, like supervisors before me. These are the people that I had to train when they first started. I am two classes away from receiving my criminal justice degree, I have seniority, and experience on the computers at work. This girl that was given the job just started 5 months ago, no degree, and hasn’t stepped one foot inside the computer room and is receiving this position. The part that really ticks me off is that they want me to tell her everything I know, so she can pretty much take my job. By the way, this girl is a niece of one of the security trainers for the main corporation. Why do you think I am not receiving this position? And what can I do about this?

You might be working for a company that does hire family over outside people first. It could also be that maybe your resume needs to be looked at again. Are you selling yourself well enough? What you do on the job sometimes doesn't matter when they are looking at a resume along with others. Talk to yours boss and see if you are missing something that needs to be done on the job. If all else fails, start looking for another job where you'll be better appreciated. With a degree coming soon, you'll be in a better position to get a better job. Good luck!

Often in the workplace, it's not what you know, it's WHO you know. It happens all the time. You shouldn't think that everyone else gets the prize and you never will. Either you will be promoted or you may find a wonderful job somewhere else that appreciates your skills. You appear to be very intelligent judging from your question---it's well written and explains fully without whining. If I were you, I wouldn't take it personally or hold grudges. It only makes you less attractive if another position opens up and it steals your peace in the meantime. That takes a large chunk of your life and basically shreds it. Not moving up the ladder doesn't mean that you aren't moving forward. Your day will come. Relax and wait on it patiently. Really that seems to be your only option at this time. I hope your turn comes soon. Best wishes.
