Although Brandon is correct on how FedEX works, UPS is a bit different. As a UPS driver, you are paid hourly whether you are a ground or an air driver. Drivers start out at 14.70/hr and after 30 months of full time driving, the pay jumps to almost 30.00/hr. Some drivers make up to 80,000/yr with overtime.
You do not need a CDL unless you are doing UPS long haul...which is a job that is almost impossible to get because the guys that do it are squatters in that position because is good darn money! It's kinda that way with package car drivers too. It could take anywhere between a year to two years to get a full time position (depending on where you are at). I am in Bozeman, MT and it takes around a year.
What most people do is take seasonal driver or helper positions and work package preloading in the off season. This way, you are getting the benefits UPS offers (which they have GREAT bennies) and it's easier to get hired for other positions when you are currently employed by UPS.
Now even though everything I said sounds great...it's HARD work. I don't care what anyone says...ask any driver and they will tell you they work from 7:45am til sometimes 8-9pm. It's hard if you have a family or want a social life during the week. Also, FedEX is a lot more lax than UPS on safety and uniform...an HR person or a UPS driver could tell you that. Another good thing is that when you work for UPS, you are part of the teamsters union, which is great because of job security and pay contract updates. FedEX doesn't have that...so that part makes it worth working for UPS.
UPS is a great company to work for-even though sometimes it's chaotic (you never know what your volume is going to be from one day to the next). It's rough. But good luck.

Depends on the size truck you will be driving..but probably yes...long hours lots of hours but they do have good benefits and are a union shop.

I used to work for Fedex, but not as a driver. I know a little bit about it.
You don't need a CDL license unless you're driving one of those big rigs. The vans that are driven around town require only your standard drivers license.
It's a lot of heavy lifting. In Fedex, the heaviest package you'll encounter is 150 pounds. Anything heavier and you'd have to ship it freight. Make sure you've got proper posture and are AT LEAST athletically inclined.
You'll also have to determine whether or not you want to do Ground delivery or Express (in Fedex terms) delivery. They each have different responsibilities, but essentially the same position. In Fedex, the pay is different. Express people are paid by the hour. Whereas Ground drivers are paid per package picked up. Depending on your route, you could make upwards of $100,000. Express drivers got excellent benefits though. Discounted flights and stuff like that.
It really isn't a difficult job, you just have pay attention. Make sure packages are routed correctly, all relevant labels are attached... stuff like that. Hope this helps.
