Too old to do an apprentice as a hairdresser?
Asked by jewelz
I am 27 and have 3 kids I was wondering if it is too late to begin as an apprentice hairdresser. I have friends in the industry and she makes good money and is a very good hairdresser. She is 40 and she started her training at 16. Have I left it too late???

You can still do it but an apprentice wage is very low.

You will be hard pressed finding someone to take you on mainly because as a mature age apprentice they would be paying near full rates but not getting the skills. In the hospitality industry you can do the theory/tafe blocks yourself (they cost money) and then do your ön the job" with an employer - same thing with the wages but at least they don't have your tafe fees. It may be same for hairdressing. Depending on your situation sometimes centrelink subsidise employers for employing mature age people or people returning to the workforce after some time - give them a call.
