is it a good job?

It depends on the practice. Some are small offices where you're really a secretary and doing alot of word processing and other places are large and just need a glorified greeter. But basically you're gretting patients, getting their charts, handling patient traffic in and out of the examining room(s). Taking calls, making appointments, and veryfying insurance. Some receptionists are medical assistants and /or billers as well. It could be a great job if you find a position that pays well and the staff are friendly and supportive.

check out www.dol.gov (dept. of labor) and see the occupational outlook guide. It will give all the info you need plus projected outlook to 2012 or later.

I was a medical receptionist for a short period of time. First it depends on the hospital or clinic that you are working for. If it is a bigger hospital, it may be kind of busy and hectic. Normally smaller clinics are better to work for. Not as much stress and aggravation. Pretty much what a medical receptionist does is some insurance verification along with checking patient's in and answering phones. All hospitals and clinics have different duties associated with this position. With technology growing in the health care industry, most of it is probably computer work.
