Can I negotiate for a higher base salary for an outside sales rep?
Asked by fingerprint
I have been offered a position as an outside sales rep.. I recieved my offer letter today but I am very unhappy with the base salary. I will be getting commission but I want my base salary to be about $3000 - $5000 higher. I was placed into this position through a headhunter and it is a Fortune 350 company.
Outside sales reps.... Can I negotiate for a higher base salary?

You can always try....some things to think about:
What is the target or average salary for a sales rep in the industry and market?
Is the job servicing existing customers? or
Primarily seeking new accounts?
What is your risk/reward ratio of base to commissions?
Hopefully, there will be some kind of thought on the employer's part on the compensation package. For example:
If the target is for example 100K and you want 80% base then your upside should be limited to 120% of base.
If your base is 50% of target then your upside should be 150%.
There should be a difference between servicing existing customers (higher base/lower leverage) and new accounts (lower base/higher leverage).
As a salesman, pick the package that you are comfortable with....a lot has to do with your personal situation and attitude.
The negoiation is between your situation and the real requirements of the job. Don't expect the job to change if it is an existing position with a track record. The size and wealth of the employer is somewhat independent of job which is more likely defined by the market (especially if there is an emerging direct internet competitor).
Good luck, all they can say is no.

Companies want outside salespeople that can SELL. That's why they pay you commission.
By asking for a larger base, you will be sending a message that you are unable to earn a decent commission instead.

Probably so if they are in fairly urgent need and you have a good track record - i'm never offended when I get asked that question. My suggestion would be to tell them you are very interested and feel you can do an outstanding job, however, the salary level is of concern and can they revisit the offer letter. If you get a 'no' then ask if they'd be willing to give you a guaranteed Draw for the first 6 months while you learn the company and industry.
