Career Questions and Answers

Carrie
What can I do if I'm frustrated with a new job and my boss is impatient?
Asked by Carrie
I began at Movie Gallery at the start of November. I made it clear that I took classes in a city about forty five minutes away, and could only work weekends. Thus, I have worked maybe a total of 10 shifts so far, and I haven't completely memorized all the procedures yet. My boss doesn't see things this way and thinks I should've learned everything since I've been here a month and a half. I'm trying as hard as I can, but there are one or two functions that I'm not used to yet. How can I make her understand that I've only worked the equivalent of a week and a half, and that I'm not completely incompetent? I'm saving up for an NYC trip in March, and really don't have time to get retrained at a new job.

Well, maybe you should just tell her exactly as you just did here. That you have only worked the equivalent of one week and things just aren't staying with you during the week. But - in order to appease her maybe you could volunteer any spare time that you aren't busy with school, to work so that you can get used to all the procedures.. She'll be delighted that you are so willing to learn and you'll be happy when you see that paycheck with extra hours!

The answer submitted by Kerry was a good one.Maybe if you suggest working a little extra here and there to get yourself up to speed on the procedures that you are still a little shaky on, she will not be so upset with you and you will not feel so stressed at work as a result. This might make everyting better.
