Choosing a career...?? Please help!?
Asked by mwp.
I'm a senior in college. My major is Human Development and Family Studies and I'm interested in working with children [either one on one or in small groups] that need extra support and care. I'm looking into the following: 1. Elementary Ed. Teacher 2. School Social Worker 3. Early Intervention Specialist 4. Special Education-- Emotional/Social Needs 5. Child Case Worker 6. Child Mental Health Counselor 7. Child Life Specialist 8. Elementary Guidance Counselor Ideally, I would like to work in a school setting but overall, want to help children in need...and have stability in my salary/benefits as well. Suggestions?

The only person who can really answer this question for you is yourself. We can offer a suggestions, but it looks like your list is pretty thorough. Have you looked into taking a position at a hospital working with children in need? A good suggestion would be a home for abused children, or perhaps a childrens cancer ward in the hospital. These children need a lot of help - physical, mental - and it takes a very special and understanding person to be able to help them take their minds off their problems and cope with their situation.

I work in HR for a not for profit organization that employs Early Intervention Specialists. I will tell you this, they don't make much money at all. You say you want salary stability, but most of these jobs are pretty low paying. Just follow your heart, not the salary. If you're really concerned about salary, you're in the wrong field. I can honestly say though, it's better to love your job than have lots of money.
