I'm not an activity assistant , I do however work in long term care. I don't know where you live but $12 an hour would be kinda high around here. The job responsibilities would be to run activities and chart participation.

If you are an aide, you will help out the activities director. Sometime you chart depending on the place you are working.
12.00 is a good entry level salary. You must live somewhere up North where they pay their aides a decent wage.

For general info (not solely for 'activity aide'): http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'Recreation Workers' or such.
Wikipedia albeit Not for professional research has info on 'Recreational Therapists' (though that is typically a four year degree) and has some basic info: http://www.wikipedia.org
Just fyi, on wikipedia's site, there is also info about 'animal-assisted therapy' or pet therapy which may be done in a nursing/long-term care facility just to allow yourself to possibly be a more well-rounded person for the interview :)
And a happy new year to you as well ;)
