Do you need perfect eyesight to become a welder?

I wear contact lenses as I am short-sighted. Would this completely right off any chance of becoming a welder?

My dad is a welder, he makes corrigated tunnels and the barriers on motorways, and his vision isnt perfect so I'd guess not
but u have to have some experience with technical drawing and machinery :)

No, perfect eyesight is not a requirement.
Before you commit though talk to other welders or try it yourself if possible.
I am a maintenance mechanic in a factory and must weld out of necessity and I do not enjoy it one bit. The vapors and smoke is tremendous in some cases. And yes eye protection, the ultraviolet put out by the ark will cook your retinas and give you a good sunburn.
I end up stinking, eyes burning and sinuses trashed every time.
I am not bashing welders, please don't bash me, I have a deep respect for welders, but you really must be cut out for it to do it for a living. Not everyone can do it just because they can weld.
