Want to be Park Ranger or Forest Ranger!?
Asked by Curious Cat
Okay, I have 3 years military exp. and will be finished with my criminal justice associates degree come Aug 1, 2008. I would like a job close to Ohio but will go anywhere. Will I be able to get a job with just army exp., if not would they hold the job for me till I graduate. Also what national school do you have to go to in order to be a park/forest ranger, and if you know how long is it. Any info would be appreciated, thank you.

Get into school and start working on a forestry degree. While you're in school take anything you can get your hands on, seasonal part time work anything. I applied for a position with the forestry service in washington state a few years back, this position included the cleaning of toilets. They wanted me to have a degree to fill the position. Being as you are close to getting a degree and are a vet (I was too) it will likely be easier to land a position, some place. Though you very likely may have to relocate. So, things are looking good, you'll be able to clean toilets at a national park soon enough! Seriously, get started on a 2yr forestry degree asap. Good luck.

I have thought about this too. Many positions readily available are seasonal employment and low paid. They also offer internship programs. Naturally, you could always get one of those jobs if while you finish your degree. Check the web site below to learn about the jobs that are available in your state and what qualifications you need. Since the National Park Service is federal job, your military time can help you get in the door.
