how does one search for a job while working fulltime?
Asked by RameelRaymundo
Say you're at a job where your upward mobility is limited, and you want to work somewhere for more pay, but at the same time, you can't quit your job and go broke. Also, you dont want to let on to your current job your look for another. What strategies are there to handle a situation like this?

Look for jobs in the evenings from home. If you do it from your computer at work, they'll find out and you could open a can of worms you dont want too.
Send out resumes, reply to job ad's, etc from home. If a potential employer emails/contacts you about an interview, take a 1/2 day vacation that day and go to the interview.

You are going to have to force yourself to do an organized job search. What I mean by this is say that you can only dedicate an hour or two each night after work to getting on the computer and reading job ads, working on a resume, or anything job search related. Fine, but MAKE YOURSELF. Commit yourself to a set amount of time each day and try to accomplish as much as possible. Then, when something does come to fruition, quit the current job for a better one.

On your resume and cover letter you can keep the name of the company for which you work confidential until you have a second interview. You could identify it as "Public Manufacturing Company" or "Private Design Company" or something---enough to help explain your experience, but not so much that you actually say who it is. That way you control who knows where you work and that you are conducting a job search. You can also attend business events after work to meet other people and find out about openings that might be of interest, who to talk to at the company with the opening, etc. You can also watch for job fairs in your area and schedule a vacation day to attend those to spread your resume around a lot of companies quickly, and even get a face to face with recruiters right then and there.
