What kinds of degrees or certifications does one need to be a substitue teacher?
Asked by losangeles
It seems much easier than being a regular teacher. But do you need all the same credentials that a teacher does?

It depends on the individual states. There is a general trend to require a bachelors degree for substitutes, however. So even in states that don't currently need a bachelors, that may not be the case five to ten years from now.
Subs usually have to take a short training session. Don't confuse this with a teaching certification course, it is not remotely near the complexity.
Subs may seem easier but it may be hard to make a living doing that by itself without another job lined up. Sub teaching almost never gives you any benefits, for example, and unlike being a regular teacher where step increases are common, that isn't really the case in sub teaching (this means you could be a sub for 30 years and make the same as a newbie sub).

I think you just have to have a college degree. May depend on where you apply.

You don't have to have a degree to be a substitute teacher. All you need is 75 hours college credit.
