If you enjoy being with children, babysitting out of your home is a great way to make some extra money. I did this for years because I wanted to make a little spending money, and I wanted a playmate for my child. In your case even a second or third shift working parent would work, and there are very few day cares open at those hours. A few tips, you have to be dependable, if you can't watch their child, they can't work! So even if you or your child are sick, you still have to be available, or have a back up person you trust, and is Ok with the parent. Second, you need to be able to count on your paychecks, so if you have a child on a regular schedule, you get paid whether the child comes or not, as long as it is not you who can't be available. If my parents got paid vacations, so did I, day cares work the same way. You pay for the child's "space" if you use it or not is up to you. Get your checks a week in advance whenever possible to avoid being left w/o being paid. If your child is younger, a child his or her age is very helpful. Be sure to spend quality time with the child, help him/her with home work if needed and just treat him or her the same way you'd want your child to be treated. I baby sat for 2 families, 4 children, the oldest is now 20 and the youngest is 10, her mother is now a stay at home mom, but she still comes to see me 2 or 3 days a week and her mom still pays me, unless I invite her over, which happens a lot just because we love her! With both the families I worked for, my husband and I are to be their legal guardians if anything should happen to the parents. We (my family) became very attached to the children I watched, and they are very attached to us. It worked out very well for me, and when it comes to taxes, you now have a home business, so part of your mortgage or rent is tax deductible as is groceries, electric and phone. A trip to the Zoo or a movie or mcdonalds is a business expense, but not all parents claim child care on their taxes so you are a "general contractor" of sorts there, so you have to decide what you claim on your taxes. It was a perfect job for me, I volunteered at my children's schools and took my charges with me, They went with us to our children's sporting events, school plays, or whatever. If I needed to work again, I would do this again in a split second. The parents that appreciate you will give you raises when they get raises, others you may have to increase your prices a bit every year to cover any costs you ensure, which really is minimal. Art projects, science experiments, trips to the park or what not is stuff you do with your own children anyway, so a couple of more really doesn't make much difference.
