Career Questions and Answers

Always Right
What are some good careers where real estate meets finance?
Asked by Always Right
I graduated college in 2003 and I started working for a smaller industrial bank. I worked in their residential real estate division and I was in a rotational program that had me experience several different roles. I have been in sales operations, underwriting, and then I took the highly coveted account executive role. My progression within this field was then going to progress into working on the corporate side of the real estate securities process with an eventual career path towards doing some sort of securities sales or trading. Unfortunately I got to the account executive portion of the puzzle and then the secondary markets for real estate securities crashed. I have a true passion for real estate and for finance. I want to move more into the financial side of real estate as was the career path that I was on. Any ideas or comments?

Real estate investing.

You could look at being a mortgage loan originator. While the markets are very slow right now, people are still buying homes and they are still getting loans to do so. Look at a bank and not at a mortgage broker.......when times get slow, I think people trust their banker more.

I would say find a new industry- I am assuming that since you graduated college in 2003 you are still in your mid-20's. There are literally tens of thousands of people in this industry out of work, and the opportunities are going to be few and far between for the next few years. Changing careers only gets harder as you get older- take advantage of your youth while you can!

It depends on how bad you want it! Being a Mortgage Banker right now was the best decision I could have made...because I love what I do & I'm passionate about it. Is the market slow...for the originators that are not innovative...absolutely. I'm here to tell you though - if you're passionate...you'll win! Keep your head up!
