I am not a fan of bartender schools either. Your best bet is to get a job at a restaurant with a bar. See if they have a barback position, or take a cocktail waitress job and see if you can get your foot in the door as the next bartender.
Restaurants will often hire from within. Offer to train behind the bar for free. Be there to pick up the crappy shifts, and soon enough you'll be getting some good shifts.
There are a lot of lousy drink recipe books, but one good one is called something like: New York Bartender's Guide.
go through that and get a hold of basic recipes.
If you have a good work ethic and are good to your customers you will end up with a good position.

Go to a bar and fill out an application. Start with a cheesy bar and work your way up.

Go to the worst dive bar in your area. They are more likely to hire people who have no experience. Then learn everything you can. A lot of bar owners "poach" employees. They will seek you out and you could get a few great offers.
