Getting an education in an IT related major i.e. Info Systems, Comp Sci, Comp Engineering.
Also look into certifications. A+ is the most popular entry level certification for comp technicians. CCNA (Cisco Certification) is popular for those getting into networking. SAP certification for those getting into ERP (enterprise resource planning) Check link below for more info on certifications.
With a A+ certification you work as a computer repair technician at like Best Buy (geek squad) or work in computer labs at schools. Those are good entry level positions.
I would suggest getting an A+ certification, its relatively easy to get and its a lifetime license. Then when you get into a specific area of IT you like such as networking, security, ERP then look into those certifications.

Get a Degree in IT. That's the best place to start.

To better open yourself to more possibilities I would say get a degree in Computer information Systems or Management Information Systems. Usually these degrees are associated with a Bachelor in Business administration with focus on CIS or MIS. Not only will these degrees give you the knowledge you need for programming, databases, networking and such but you will have the knowledge and training to manage in this field too... or at least have the first step toward an advanced MBA in CIS or MIS down the road. I have a BBA in MIS and work in IT in the healthcare industry. I also have a degree in computer science but that is harder to get good paying jobs in this field now since this is primarily programmers, network analyst and the such unless you live in a very big area.
