Is working for the government considered prestigious?
Asked by Captain Snuggles
I just got a job with the Department of Commerce. I want to know what people out there think of people who work for the US Government.
Yes, obviously it depends what you are doing for the government. I wasnt referring to mailmen or janitors that work for the government.

Just like the private sector, there are great jobs and there are McJobs.
Working for the Department of Commerce should be something to be proud of, but there are careers that get more respect.

just working for the government doesnt make it prestigious. the ABC(liquor store) is a government job.... prestigious? no... fun, of course.
However, working for the gov. certainly has lots of benefits. Some jobs could be prestigious.

Unless you are a legislator, a high court judge, a governor, or maybe an ambassador or something, it is not prestigious. Most government workers are considered bureaucrats.
Many with regulatory agencies such as the IRS, OSHA, etc. are actually hated.
But the benefits and work schedule is usually nice.

Depending on what level you are working for. Do you consider your mail person prestigious? They are gov. employees. I think any job that requires a hard education and years of experience is prestigious.

Those that can do.
Those that can't are in government service.
Sorry but that's my feeling on "most" government employees and bureaucrats in general.
Good luck

God no!!! Put in your time there, make as many relationships as possible and go into the private sector. Also, you will never get rich on the govt's payroll.

I work for government agency, but I don't feel prestigious. This is what I see for a government job: average pay, great benefit, and many days off (vacation, personal, floating holiday, etc.). And I still want to go back to private, except for the days off part.
