What is the best way to determine your college major / future career?

I've already done 2 years at college with no particular field in mind (just knocking out my generals). Now I'm taking a break because I have no direction. Any advice/tips/ideas?
I've tried those career assessments and they all use advanced words that I don't understand very well.

Write a list of all the things that fascinate you in life...whether its a love of architecture, advertising, animals, business, government, museums, medicine, teaching, auto mechanics, etc. Take a term off of school, and call people who do these jobs and ask if you can interview them about what they do, how they like it, and how they knew it was for them. Then ask if you can volunteer in some capacity for a week, or shadow them for a day.
Meanwhile, get a part time job doing anything....from fast food to factory work, just to pay your own way for that term. Pay your parents rent and buy your own food. After coming home with french fry grease on your face and a measly paycheck and having to struggle a bit, your mind will get focused! You will be back in college with a clear idea of what you want to do within the year.
Immerse yourself in as many different types of careers job shadowing as you can. People would be glad to help, many would be very flattered that you ask. And, it may help you get a job someday in the field of your interest!

do whats you're good at. if all else fails, pick a subject and be a teacher.
